The Lord Is My Shepherd
A Psalm of David.
23 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
3 He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
What you need to understand about Psalm 23:
Psalm 23 is about having faith in the Lord by having total dependence in him for anything that you need or want in life for your wellbeing. All are included: material, spiritual, protection, correction, peace, happiness, direction, confidence, purpose, elevate, and love.
David said “The Lord is my Shepherd” A Shepherd is an individual that looks after sheep. In Psalm 23, David considers himself as sheep and God is his Shepherd. A sheep is an animal that needs a shepherd full assistance to be able to have a quality of life and to be protected from eaten by wild animals. Here is the characteristic of a shepherd: He is faithful, He protects, He guides, He nurtures, and He provides. Here is the Characteristic of a sheep: Gentle, trust their leaders and show esteem to them, and dependable.
When David said, “I shall not want” that is having everything that he needs. When he said, “He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.” that is peace. When he said, “He restores my soul.” that is happiness. When he said, “He leads me in paths of righteousness.” that is knowing right from wrong for spiritual growth. When he said, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil.” that is confidence. When he said, “your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” that is giving rest through correction. When he said, “you prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.” that is elevation. When he said, “you anoint my head with oil.” that is protection (sheep usually have flies that are resting on their head that cause them to be tormented, the shepherd would rob oil to keep them away). When he said, “surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” that is always trusting the Lord for quality of life and always remained in his presence until the day he dies.
